Laparoscopic nephrectomy is an accepted method to remove the kidney in many cases of benign renal disease. Common conditions in which simple nephrectomy has been successfully performed by the laparoscopic method include: renovascular hypertension, chronic kidney infection (chronic pyelonephritis), non-functioning hydronephrotic kidneys, non-functioning kidney with staghorn stone, symptomatic kidney with cysts.
